Mothers of Innovation is a real family business inspired by my daughter; it didn't start as part of a grand commercial plan but in response to a parenting need. I first made a ' Rockin Hood ' after we despaired of finding something like it that would be cute and enable us to adapt to changing temperatures quickly (i.e. getting my daughter to and from home / car / bus and so on). Since then every time I arrived with a warm baby who could be unwrapped in seconds, friends and acquaintances wanted to know where I found the hoody. I was interested in taking the idea further, but the options didn't seem appealing because I was exhausted as DD was not sleeping through. Also, I did not have the money to invest in stock, and the route to market seemed either time consuming or expensive.

My career has involved working in the fashion industry, managing and marketing a craft gallery, PR, writing business plans and more, and I am surrounded by some scarily talented technical wizards. When given the option of redundancy I was initially shocked by the lack of scope for part-timers until I realised that my skills and my perceived gap in the market meant I could be on to something really exciting. If I was initially stuck for somewhere to sell my Rockin Hood, and I had come across some really innovative products for families that were tough to track down, Mothers of Innovation had to be the answer!

I am now working with a great little team of graphic designers, technical wizards, marketeers and, of course, my chief tester. One of the best things about setting up on your own (apart from the joys of working till the kids think it's morning) is that you set the goalposts, and our main aim is to work in a happy environment where we respect our colleagues and our wider community.
